the first inspection
05/16/09 12:54 PM
I inspected my bees for the first time today! Once
again, I didn't get stung. I had some trouble
starting my smoker, but got it going eventually. Then
I got suited up( except the gloves), and opened up
the hive.
The first and second screens were stuck together with burr comb( comb built off of the foundation) and covered in bees. When we looked at the comb, we saw it was shaped like a heart!
See it?
This is me brushing the bees off
the comb. The queen was on the third frame, and
the others hadn't been built on yet. We are
going to wait a week before checking on them
again.
Here are me and my sister, Anna,
eating some of the burr comb. It tasted good,
and was definitely honey! There was also some
pollen, but we didn't eat that. I was suprised
the bees were already were making honey. I guess
that is a good sign.
